Picking up the check, letting you choose the location, and making eye contact can tell you a lot about your date's personality.

Looking for a nice guy? Sometimes the best way to figure out if a guy is worth his salt is by watching what he does when you go out. Here are some common things nice guys do on a first date.

He Immediately Pays for the Check

A guy that is generous with his money is generally giving with other aspects of his personality, such as his affection and his time. If he grabs the check and fluffs off any of your offers to pay, he's trying to show you that he would put you first. On the other hand, if a guy insists that you split the check or even pay the tip, he is already trying to control what you do.

To that end, pay attention to how he reacts if you offer to pick up the tab. If he thinks about it for several seconds or seems annoyed when he tells you he will get the bill, this is a sign that he is just going through the motions of courtesy.

He Lets You Pick the Place

When it comes to a first date, a woman should always be able to make the choice on where to go. Women deal with dating safety concerns far more than men do and should be able to choose a place that is comfortable for them. A guy that insists on where to meet disregards his date's point-of-view.

He Lets You Be a Part of the Conversation

Both parties are usually nervous on a first date, so it's understandable that some guys may talk a lot to cover up their jitters. However, no matter what the conversation, a guy should pause and let you give your two cents worth. A man that drones on and on without regard for what you have to say, or seems uninterested when you speak shows that he'll always think of his own needs first.

His Eyes Stay on You

A guy that does not make eye contact while you talk is not only rude, but also arrogant. After all, common first date etiquette suggests that even when you find your date boring, you should still smile and be polite. If a guy seems bored while you struggle to keep the conversation going, imagine how difficult it would be to keep him entertained while the two of you are in a relationship.

Likewise, if a guy looks around during your date, he may be looking for an exit or even checking out other women. This indicates a man who can't be content, no matter what the situation.

He Asks If You Need Anything

A guy that wants to please his gal will not assume anything about the evening. Even if she has a full cup of coffee and has just eaten, he will ask if she needs anything else. This type of eagerness lets a woman know that he is determined to provide for her happiness.

He's Okay With a Change in Plan

Life isn't perfect, and that includes dating. So when things don't work out as the two of you had planned, watch how your man reacts. If he's upset and angry, he may be someone that can't roll with the ups and downs of life. On the other hand, if he shrugs it off and suggests a new activity, he is someone that knows life is what you make it.

Perhaps the most important way to spot a nice guy is by paying attention to your feelings. If you seem put off by something he's said, or are a bit frightened by being alone with him, get some distance. Before you get to know any guy, always put dating safety first when getting to know someone new. However, don't let it deter you from meeting the guy of your dreams. Nice guys do exist, and they are looking for someone just like you.

The looking around thing gets caused by nervousness sometimes, too.
And when I don't make eye contact, I'm just nervous...
The boredom is definitely a relevant personality indicator, though...

Poor eye contact can also be a form of attention deficit.

You have to be careful with the looking around especially if your in a new place and the guy is just checking everything out. plus i know i do it, check to see who she is looking at or who is looking at her but when she talks I put my full attention to her.

It depends on what you call a sign of boredom?? I am practically incapable of sitting still... I need to be doing stuff all the time or my nerves will make me bounce off the walls. I like to bring my knitting along, but I know I can only use it to calm me down if he goes to the loo or something.

If you're always that nervous, your date deserves to know that on the first date.

Full on eye contact all the time is just as big a mistake as no eye contact at all. Unless they're performing a magic trick, nobody wants to be stared at permanently, so don't forget to blink and look away once in a while. Also, in some Eastern cultures, it's actually disrespectful to be staring at somebody in the eye all the time, so bear this in mind if you're out with someone who may have been raised under the influence of such a culture. Best advice is to look at your date in the eyes when they speak, just for a few seconds, then divert your gaze towards their ear or the table as if you're pondering over what they're saying. Never stare at a girl's chest and never ever stare at other girls who might be around.
