Weather the busy times and still propel your relationship forward when you don't have time to get together.

With the busyness of life today, couples can find that spending time together may be the biggest challenge of their relationship. How do you keep love alive when your schedule keeps you apart? Here are some tips.

Is the Scheduling Conflict Temporary?

The biggest issue for couples who can’t seem to find time to be together is whether the problem is temporary, short-term, or permanent. For example, if one of you is going to school that is a temporary scheduling problem. If you’re both constantly working long hours, that may be a larger issue.

After all, you can see the light at the end of the tunnel when it comes to a temporary setback. With a permanent situation (such as a long-distance job transfer), you will need to make immediate changes in your life (such as working a different shift or finding a new job) in order to improve your situation.

Leave Your Partner Love Reminders

When you can’t spend the time together that you really want, you have to be that much more diligent to show your partner that he or she is still on your mind. Leave a note on the bathroom mirror that they are sure to see first thing in the morning, send cards to them at work, or write an email throughout the day to let your partner know he or she is on your mind.

Start a Joint Diary

When it’s hard to communicate face-to-face, try writing in a book. Purchase a beautiful notebook or diary, and record your thoughts from the day as a message to your partner. Have your partner do the same.

Even though you can’t be physically together, you will feel a sense of unity by creating this one-of-a-kind record of correspondence. Then, when your schedules slow down and you have more time with your partner, you’ll have a special keepsake to re-read years later and cherish.

Change Your Social Calendar

When you have a lot of time for a relationship, spending hours away from your partner is perfectly healthy. However, when you’ve run into a busy time you need to focus on nurturing your relationship first. Let friends and family know that you’re trying to keep all your free time for phone calls, emails, and perhaps even airline flights to keep you close to your partner.

Revise Your Idea of Quality Time

When life is filled with busy moments, even a short 15-30 minute meeting will help you connect with your partner. Take a lunch break with your partner at the park, meet them for a quick hug and kiss at home, or even take time out to talk on the phone. Don't miss an opportunity to be together just because you don't have a lot of time. If you can’t physically be with your partner as you’d like, improvise. Quality time doesn’t need to be long, but it does need to be focused.

The needs of career and family can leave couples struggling just to find time to be together. But don’t let a busy schedule ruin your relationship. When you’re with your partner, focus your attention on him or her. Don’t talk about work issues or other non-important life events that will take away from your relationship. The busy times won’t last forever, but with special care your partnership can last a lifetime.
