Tips for Women on How to Make Abstinence a Rewarding Experience

Practicing celibacy has traditionally been seen as an activity for the clergy, but today many women chose to be celibate for seasons of their lives. While the motivations for celibacy vary, the benefits remain the same. Taking a break from sexual activity builds discipline, simplifies life, sharpens focus for other pursuits, prevents all sexually transmitted diseases, and provides the opportunity to expand sexual awareness. It can also be a time for rediscovering self pleasure and strengthening self love.

Rules for Practicing Celibacy

Being celibate is a highly personal choice and every woman should feel free to enjoy the practice within her own boundaries. There are no set rules, right or wrong answers, time limitations, or procedures for practice. However, creating and participating in activities that encourage self discovery while practicing celibacy can greatly enhance the experience.

Enrichment Activities

Here are some suggestions for activities to explore while practicing celibacy. They are designed to facilitate the exploration of the inner-self, body and personal desires. Increasing self awareness is a powerful practice that lead to more clarity about life, goals, and relationships.

  1. Self Love Rituals – Create three new rituals that are entirely devoted to building self love. They can be as simple as daily affirmations or as complex as creating art that honors the spirit.
  2. Journal – Write at least a page per day about the experience of celibacy. Include thoughts, feelings, sensation, and the benefits and personal challenges of practice.
  3. Sensual Exploration – Determine a time frame and create a comfortable environment for sensual self exploration with materials like candles, blankets, and soft music. While keeping the breath even and steady, use hands and a mirror to explore all areas of the body with care. Refrain from any negative judgment or criticism. Express gratitude for the ongoing service of the entire body.
  4. Sexual Exploration – Create an environment similar to the one used for sensual exploration, but focus on the external reproductive organs instead. Use hands, stimulators, words, visual aids, or books to discover different ways to give self-pleasure.
  5. Art – Create sketches, paintings, sculptures, poems, and stories that mirror the celibate experience. Be authentic, do not judge the art, let it flow.

Engaging in positive and self-affirming activities while practicing celibacy can further enrich the experience and help to create a satisfying life – with or without sex.
