Most women go out and have a night on the town every so often, but it's not just about having fun, it's about being safe as well.

As women become more progressive and more equal to their male counterparts, rather than staying in and having a Tupperware party, women are going out to night clubs and enjoying the night life. With that night life, comes some dangers that women need to be aware of and learn how to stay safe.

According to a study done by Inside Edition in New York City, forty-two percent of women say they have felt threatened by men inside or outside of a bar or club and thirty-eight percent say they have done something at a club or bar they believed put their safety at risk. To reduce both percentage numbers, here are some safety tips for a woman to follow:

  • Use the Buddy System. Going out with a group of girls or even just another friend can decrease the risk of harm. Men are less likely to harm a woman if she is with other people.
  • Know and follow body’s alcohol limit. According to the Inside Edition survey, fifty-six percent of women responded to say they had consumed enough alcohol to where they didn’t remember parts of the evening. Drinking any amount of alcohol will decrease alertness. A woman who knows when it is time to stop will be able to regain her alertness back.
  • Never accept drinks from strangers. Accept a drink only if the woman has seen what is being poured into it by the bartender. A woman will not know what the stranger put into the drink or exactly what his intentions are by accepting a drink from him. Also never leave drinks or purse/ID alone or with a stranger. Leaving your drink for any time period will allow for a stranger to slip something into it without the woman’s knowledge. Leaving a purse or ID alone can not only cause a theft, but also if a stranger does have bad intentions, he can find out exactly where the woman lives and any other personal information that is in her purse.
  • Women like to dress up when they go out for a night on the town, but dressing sexy also draws attention, especially to men. A woman doesn’t have to dress in an ankle-length dress, but for example if she doesn’t want to viewed in a manner where men thinks she is easy because she has cleavage showing, maybe she can cover that up with a dress that has a higher neck line and still wear a sleeveless dress on the town and still feel good about herself.
  • Lastly, a woman should always trust her instincts. If something, someone or someplace doesn’t “feel right” she should get out as soon as possible.

What if Paranoia Sneaks in and Something Could Happen?

If a woman wants to be safer and prepared in case anything does happen she should always be on alert. Talking on a cell phone or listening to an IPod while walking at night, isn’t keeping her most keen senses alert.

Another tip is to carry a key in between the index and middle finger. If anyone tries to grab her, she would just have to scrape or gouge the key on the person and do some harm to hopefully deter him. Also if a woman finds herself in a situation she can’t seem to get herself out of, yelling “FIRE!” will turn more heads than yelling “HELP!” and hopefully get her help faster.

Lastly, a woman could carry pepper spray or mace in her purse or pocket to immediately deter the offender and run away and try to find help.
