Long-distance relationships don't have to be strenuous, and can be enjoyable as long as each partner is willing to communicate and compromise.

Long-distance relationships aren’t for everyone, but for those who find themselves involved in one it can be wonderful. It does take a bit of work, though that is true for any type of relationship. Whether your mate is a few hours or a few days away from you, there are many things you can do to strengthen your relationship while you are apart.

Communication is Key

Communication is important in any relationship, but even more so in a long-distance love affair. This can be as simple as sending text messages on occasion to see how your mate is feeling or what he's up to, or starting the day with wake-up calls form each other. If you have problems or issues that you feel need to be discussed with your mate, do not keep your thoughts bottled up – this can destroy a long-distance relationship. Whether you do it on the phone, online, or through text messaging, find a time convenient for both of you to talk things through.

One thing that you should try to do often is let your mate know how you feel about thim. Since you’re not physically together as often as many couples, you can’t show your affection as easily; let your partner know how you care about and appreciate her through words, or even by sending simple gifts such as flowers or a card.

Doing Things Together while Apart

Just because you and your mate are physically separated by distance, doesn’t mean you can’t still share activities. It may seem a bit silly, but doing the same thing at the same time can be fun. For instance, you may want to watch the same television show or movie at the same time, and talk to each other while it’s on. You can even meet in an online game room and play each other while chatting.

You have to do what you can to feel closer while you’re apart. Couples who like to shop can even do that online, and ask each other for advice regarding their purchases – it’s been done before, and isn’t all too different from shopping together in person (plus, you get to skip out on the crowds and lines).

Looking Towards the Future

Eventually, your relationship may get to the point where you want to live closer together, or perhaps get married. There will be sacrifices that must be made – someone may need to leave a home, job, family, or friends behind. It would cause resentment and seem unfair if only one person had to be the one making all the sacrifices, so you two need to discuss how each of you will give to make moving closer work. Perhaps one mate can share in the other’s moving expenses, help with the move, or let her style the new combined residence to her liking.

Long-distance relationships aren’t usually long distance forever. Until you and your mate can be in the same place, or under the same roof, keep on building your emotional bond. The greatest benefit to this type of relationship is the fact that you are much less likely to take each other for granted as opposed to couples that see each other more often. Keep the communication going, share in the compromises, and your relationship will grow stronger.
